The detailed mechanism linking diabetes to TET2-mediated DNA demethylation has been unveiled by one study, which demonstrated that the hyperglycaemic condition caused a reduction in TET2 due to the inactivation of AMPK, a kinase that phosphorylates TET2 and prevents it from degradation, and epigenomic alterations occurred as a consequence of decreased TET2 (Wu et al., 2018).
