TAT and familial dilated cardiomyopathy: Koncsos et al. (2016) reported that the expression of mitochondrial autophagy-associated protein BNIP3 decreased in prediabetic rats fed with high-fat diet, followed by myocardial diastolic dysfunction (Margadant, 2020). In a recent study, mitochondrial dysfunction and DCM were observed in diabetic mice, while the injection of Tat-Beclin1 reversed such DCM by activating mitochondrial autophagy, indicating mitophagy served as a critical quality control mechanism for mitochondria in heart during high-fat diet (Tong et al., 2019).
