Considering that the presence of autoimmune diseases is an important risk factor for ASD [48], and that the occurrence of autoimmune diseases is closely related to gut microbiota imbalance [49], our observation of VFGM gene imbalance may imply abnormal immune function in gut of individuals with ASD, which makes sense in relation to the differential IgA levels observed in this group.
