In an intraperitoneal infection model, depletion of neutrophils within the first four days of infection resulted in mortality associated with severe lesions and increased systemic parasite burdens, and a similar result was seen with CXCR2 knockout mice that are defective in neutrophil recruitment (Bliss et al., 2001; Del Rio et al., 2001).
