TP53 and cancer: Mutant p53 promotes the expression of oncogenes such as MYC (110, 133), PCNA (134), KLF17 (108), EGFR (121, 135), and AXL (136), and simultaneously inhibits the function of tumor suppressors like the p53 family proteins, p63 and p73 (107, 137, 138) to sustain continuous proliferation of cancer cells (Figure 3A).
