Although the extrinsic pathway of apoptosis was induced by the combination of TNF-α and CHX, an inhibitor of protein biosynthesis that affects both the neutrophil and the parasite, we anticipate that the delay in apoptosis does not require parasite replication, since we observed an inhibition of serum starvation-induced apoptosis within 3 and 6 h after infection, time points that are prior to and just at the onset of parasite replication. The gene discussed is TNF; the disease is infection.
