In the olfactory nervous system, IL-6 likely has important roles with increased IL-6 production reported to occur throughout the primary olfactory nervous system and olfactory bulb after injury and infection (Herbert et al., 2012), with OECs shown to produce IL-6 in response to S. aureus and B. pseudomallei infection (Herbert et al., 2012; Dando et al., 2016).
