Regarding HPV-related pathophysiology, it is clearly established that HPV viral oncoproteins, E6 and E7, degrade two major tumor suppressors, p53 and pRb, upon infection, resulting in tumorigenesis in the reticular epithelium covering the tonsillar tissues, and persistent expression of E6 and E7 is required for tumor maintenance [26,27]. This evidence concerns the gene RB1 and neoplasm.
