A transcriptional coactivator that regulates a gene involved in energy metabolism in mitochondria called peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC-1α) which is an important mitochondrial protector that promotes the synthesis of NO enzymes, mitochondrial protein 2 (UCP-2), and the antioxidant defense of mitochondria (manganese SOD, catalase, and thioredoxin 2), and this way limits endothelial dysfunction [52, 101]. This evidence concerns the gene PPARGC1A and endothelial dysfunction.
