Infection of SARS-CoV-2 starts with the interaction of trimeric viral spike (S) protein with human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor on airway epithelial cells, followed by viral entry and priming of human transmembrane protease serine 2 (TMPRSS2) that cleaves the S protein and initiates viral fusion (SI Appendix, Fig. S1) (3).
