SDC1 and colorectal carcinoma: In a study by Wang et al., syndecan-1 mRNA expression was significantly higher in normal mucosa from the surgical margins of the specimen than in noncancerous mucosa adjacent to the CRC.25 Syndecan-1 shedding was found to be increased in CRC patients and decreased after chemotherapy.26 Patients with high serum level of syndecan-1 were found to be less responsive to chemotherapy.26 Syndecan-1 serum level was also shown to be a poor prognostic sign in CRC.26,27
