Interestingly, it has been reported that elevated TMAO in the liver suppresses the expression of the BA biosynthesis gene cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase (CYP7A1).15 Chen et al. reported that resveratrol (RSV), a natural phytoalexin with antiatherosclerosis effects, attenuated TMAO-induced atherosclerosis in mice by decreasing TMAO levels and increasing hepatic BA biosynthesis via gut microbiota remodeling. Here, CYP7A1 is linked to atherosclerosis.
