When the primary prostate tumor was treated with radiation (3 Gy × 5), systemic increased numbers of MDSCs were found in the spleen, lung, lymph nodes and peripheral blood while macrophage colony-stimulating factor 1 (CSF1) also increased in irradiated tumors, consistent with increased serum levels of CSF1 in patients after radiotherapy, which resulted from the recruitment of the DNA damage-induced kinase ABL1 into the cell nucleus, promoting CSF1 gene transcription.
