Increased levels of pro-inflammatory factors, for instance, interleukins-1β (IL-1β), interleukins-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP-1α), as well as decreased levels of anti-inflammatory factors, namely interleukins-4 (IL-4), interleukins-5 (IL-5), and interleukins-10 (IL-10) are detectable in the local periodontitis lesions.
