HMOX1 and Parkinson disease: Nrf2 modulates hundreds of genes, of which many are involved in regulating ferroptosis, metabolism of glutathione, iron and lipids homeostasis and mitochondrial function, and the activation of Nrf2/ARE signaling, which up-regulates the expressions of antioxidant genes, such as HO-1 and NQO1, shows neuroprotective functions in animal models of cerebral ischemia, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [30, 31].
