In contrast, in other cancers originating from lung and intestine, hypoxia‐induced factor‐1α (HIF‐1α), together with the expression of specific oncogene kinases, cause alterations in gene expression profiles that correspond to an aerobic glycolytic metabolism of glucose with reduced mitochondrial oxidation of glucose‐derived intermediate such as pyruvate (classically known as the Warburg effect) (DeBerardinis et al., 2008; Papandreou et al., 2006).
