Autotaxin (ATX), also known as nucleotide pyrophosphatase-phosphodiesterase 2 (NPP2) is a lysophospholipase D highly expressed both in synovium from RA patients and arthritic animal models [40] and is responsible for the cleavage of lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) to lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), a serum-borne factor mandatory in vitro for RANKL-induced osteoclast formation [41,42].
