Downregulation of IRF5 signaling by siRNA or conditional knockout (CKO) results in enhanced M2 activation, abrogated proinflammatory responses, and improved stroke outcomes, whereas increased IRF5 expression enhances M1 activation, exacerbates proinflammatory responses, and worsens functional recovery (Mamun et al., 2020a).
