The study by Li & colleague also showed that exosomes administered to necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC)-an intestinal injury with impaired mucin synthesis, was able to prevent the morphological injury (158), thus showing the novel ability of exosomes in treatment of high-risk infants with NEC disease, whose very low birth weight and premature birth has mortality rate of approximately 50% due to extensive intestinal necrosis, and organ failure (158). This evidence concerns the gene MUC5AC and necrotizing enterocolitis.
