In a recent study involving RSV, which promotes an infection largely related to oxidative lung injury, the degradation of Nrf2, and consequently decreased levels of antioxidant enzymes, researchers found that single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the catalase enzyme promoter gene provided antioxidant protection against severe RSV bronchiolitis in samples of nasopharyngeal secretions from children with the disease [51]. The gene discussed is CAT; the disease is infection.
