Strikingly, S12 cells, which were derived from a low steatosis donor and showed an intermediate phenotype regarding LD size and quantity, had the highest induction of PLIN2. While the specific morphologies and distribution of LDs might be associated with disease severity, further investigations comparing several high-steatosis patient and healthy donor derived samples are necessary to exclude influences of age, gender, and cell culture effects. The gene discussed is PLIN2; the disease is steatosis.
