We have recently showed that infection of macrophages with enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) triggers a cell death cascade in which activation of caspase‐4 by LPS leads to activation of the NLRP3/ASC/caspase‐1 inflammasome and pyroptosis (Goddard et al., 2019), and caspase‐4 is also involved in recognition of STm infection in IFNγ‐primed macrophages (Fisch, Bando, et al., 2019; Fisch, Clough, et al., 2020; Kutsch et al., 2020; Santos et al., 2020; Wandel et al., 2020). This evidence concerns the gene IFNG and infection.
