We therefore used a targeted metabolomics approach in a cohort of mothers with GDM and their offspring who participated in a clinical study visit 8 years after delivery with the aim to investigate: (1) whether plasma metabolite levels in response to glucose challenge are correlated between mothers and offspring several years postpartum independent of postpartum BMI and insulin sensitivity, which may also be shared between mothers and their offspring, and (2) whether intergenerational metabolomics may be affected by dietary glycemic load or physical activity behavior. This evidence concerns the gene INS and gestational diabetes.
