At the fat-mass and obesity-associated gene (FTO) rs9939609 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), carriers of the obesity-risk A-allele present a higher risk of obesity compared to homozygous carriers of the T-allele in Europeans [1,2], primarily because of elevations in appetite and energy intake [3,4]. The gene discussed is FTO; the disease is obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
