In T1DM mice, hyperglycemia affects cerebral microcirculation, increases cortical microvessel density, induces smooth muscle and endothelial cell dysfunction, decreases tight junction proteins, and decreases the expression of angiogenic factor such as Ang1, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor‐β, and platelet‐derived growth factor‐β compared to non‐DM mice.11 This evidence concerns the gene VEGFA and type 1 diabetes mellitus.
