CD36 and steatosis: As a membrane of glycoprotein, fatty acid translocation enzyme CD36 (CD36) is weakly expressed in hepatocytes and liver tissue under physiological conditions but significantly increased in animal models and NAFLD patients (Greco et al., 2008; Garcia-Monzon et al., 2014), while overexpression of CD36 led to steatosis in mice, and liver-specific knockout of CD36 reduced lipid content in mice fed with high fat diet (HFD) (Koonen et al., 2007; Wilson et al., 2016).
