Mutations of the SHANK gene family (SHANK1-3) have been linked to psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorders, or intellectual disability (Wilson et al., 2003; Durand et al., 2007; Berkel et al., 2010; Sato et al., 2012; Peykov et al., 2015).
