A large portion of FTO protein localizes in the cytoplasmic part of certain acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cell lines, where it can demethylate cap-m6Am and up to 40% of all mRNA m6A. Also, 5% to 10% of mRNA m6A are demethylated by FTO in HeLa and HEK cell lines (Sanchez-Pulido and Andrade-Navarro, 2007; Jia et al., 2011; Gulati et al., 2014; Aas et al., 2017; Li et al., 2017; Su et al., 2018; Wei et al., 2018). This evidence concerns the gene FTO and acute myeloid leukemia.
