PROS1 and severe acute respiratory syndrome: Coronaviruses are enveloped, non-segmented, single-stranded, positive-sense ribonucleic acid (RNA) viruses named after their corona- or crown-like surface projections seen on electron microscopy that correspond to large surface spike proteins.2 Coronaviruses in the recent past have come to attention as pathogens of emerging respiratory disease outbreaks such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2002–2003 and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) in 2012–2014.
