CRH and post-traumatic stress disorder: Based on the evidence that the immature hippocampus responds to early stress by releasing corticotropin-releasing hormone (Chen et al., 2004) and that subfield hippocampal volumes are decreased in individuals with a history of childhood maltreatment (Andersen et al., 2008; Weniger et al., 2008; Mehta et al., 2009; Teicher et al., 2012; Chaney et al., 2014), we hypothesized that specific hippocampal subfield abnormalities might be detected in the pediatric PTSD patient group relative to the non-PTSD control group.
