The reason for this very narrow focus on NLRP3 as a PRR that initiates inflammasome activation in AMD is that various stimuli that are well-established risk factors for AMD, including increased oxidative stress or lipid accumulations, are known activators of the NLRP3 inflammasome (Guo et al., 2015; Latz et al., 2013; Schroder and Tschopp, 2010). This evidence concerns the gene NLRP3 and age-related macular degeneration.
