Previous studies demonstrated that MANF is a protective factor for dopamine neurons in animal models of Parkinson disease, cardiac myocytes in myocardial infarction, cortical neurons in ischemic stroke, and retinal cells in models of photodamage (Airavaara et al., 2009; Glembotski et al., 2012; Lu et al., 2018; Neves et al., 2016; Voutilainen et al., 2009). The gene discussed is MANF; the disease is Parkinson disease.
