Besides, a study reported that AFP could stimulate expression of epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) [38,39], while silencing of EpCAM could suppress hepatic fibrosis and hepatic stellate cell proliferation in a mouse model of acholic hepatitis [38], indicating increased AFP level possibly led to progression of liver fibrosis by stimulating the EpCAM.
