Whereas a higher COVID-19 mortality and morbidity among smokers may be due its causal association with COPD and CVD, Cai et al. [99] has also observed upregulation of pulmonary Angiotensin Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2) gene expression and hence, pulmonary ACE2 receptors in smokers suggesting a direct effect of smoking on COVID-19 susceptibility and disease progression. The gene discussed is ACE2; the disease is COVID-19.
