On the other hand, it has been proposed that increased RCAN1 may have protective effect on atherosclerosis based on the fact that patients with Down syndrome (trisomy of chromosome 21) have a low incidence of atherosclerosis and hypertension, a risk factor for atherosclerosis, and the RCAN1 gene is located on chromosome 21 (de Asua et al. 2015; Murdoch et al. 1977; Rodrigues et al. 2011; Roy-Vallejo et al. 2020; Ylä-Herttuala et al. 1989). The gene discussed is RCAN1; the disease is atherosclerosis.
