Rcan1 deletion can significantly decrease CD36 level in the aortic arches while complementary expression of both Rcan1.1 and Rcan1.4 could concomitantly increase the numbers of oxLDL particles taken up by macrophages, indicating the protective effect of RCAN1 downregulation on atherosclerosis might be mediated by CD36 reduction (Mendez-Barbero et al. 2013). This evidence concerns the gene RCAN1 and atherosclerosis.
