Indeed, a previous analysis, albeit of only two studies, concluded that high levels of FoxP3+ cells are associated with significantly reduced overall survival in cervical cancer.103 Our findings in the FoxP3 meta-analysis and CD25 qualitative summary also suggest that an increased presence of regulatory T-cells is associated with more severe disease, that regulatory T-cell infiltration may inhibit the immune response at all stages of cervical carcinogenesis, and that this effect may be greater for HPV16, the most highly carcinogenic HPV type. The gene discussed is FOXP3; the disease is cervical cancer.
