HMGB1 secreted by melanoma tumors has also been shown to activate endothelial cells through the engagement of RAGE, also resulting in the expression of the adhesion molecules VCAM-1, ICAM-1, and E-selectin, and in the recruitment of immune cells in the tumors, as well as in the secretion of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-8 and G-CSF to sustain an inflammatory tumor milieu [263,264]. The gene discussed is AGER; the disease is melanoma.
