SLC8B1 and hydrops fetalis: Deletion of NCLX in adult mouse hearts causes sudden death with severe myocardial dysfunction and fulminant HF due to mitochondrial Ca2+ overload, whereas overexpression of NCLX in the mouse heart displays potent beneficial effect of augmenting mitochondrial Ca2+ clearance, and protecting against ischemia-induced cardiomyocyte necrosis and HF (Luongo et al., 2017).
