The accumulation of lipids and lipid derivatives in the sub-RPE space and the association of genes involving lipid metabolism such as APOE (apolipoprotein E), CETP (cholesteryl ester transfer protein), LIPC (hepatic lipase gene) and LPL (lipoprotein lipase) with AMD provide support for the postulated role lipids play in the pathogenesis of AMD [56,57,58,59]. This evidence concerns the gene APOE and age-related macular degeneration.
