Mechanistically, the proinflammatory cytokine IL-6 exerts a central function to initiate inflammation induced coagulation via the expression of tissue factor on both mononuclear cells as well as the vascular endothelium [9], contributing to the formation of microthrombi, a hallmark of organ injury not only in sepsis, but also increasingly described in COVID-19 [13–15].
