Several studies previously suggested that adhesion of MM cells to BMSCs triggered NF-κB-mediated transcription and cytokine secretion, which was associated with growth and survival of MM cells, including the production of cytokines (IL-6, IL-1-β, TNF-α), cell adhesion molecules (ICAM), vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM) and the proangiogenic factor (VEGF)c.
