Glycyrrhizin, a constituent ofGlycyrrhiza glabra or liquorice root, is used intraditional medicine for alleviating bronchitis, gastritis, and jaundice, withanti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.89 Progesterone previously identified as neuroprotective after ischemicstroke in vivo also inhibited HMGB1 expression andproinflammatory cytokines like IL-1β in experimental ICH.47 It appears from these studies that targeting HMGB1 release and action inICH patients has clinical relevance and is a potential avenue for therapy. The gene discussed is HMGB1; the disease is bronchitis.
