Ginkgolides are a class of drug isolated from the Ginkgo bilobatree and ginkgolide B specifically has been used to treat cerebrovasculardisease as a selective antagonist of glycine receptors and platelet activating factor.80 It has neuroprotective activity against nitric oxides, hasanti-inflammatory properties,81 stimulates the upregulation of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1),82 and causes inhibition of apoptotic protein expression.83 Ginkgolide B has also been explored as a therapy for cerebral ischemia, increasing BBB permeability and reducing edema84in vivo. Here, HMOX1 is linked to brain ischemia.
