Through transcriptional regulation of select target genes in a highly cell- and tissue-type-specific and stress signal-specific manner, p53 regulates various cellular responses, including apoptosis, cell cycle arrest, senescence, DNA repair, metabolism, anti-oxidant defense, autophagy and ferroptosis, contributing to the role of p53 in tumor suppression [2,3,4,25,26] (Figure 1).
