Dysfunctional ASCs isolated from patients with type 2 diabetes exhibit a similar trend in mitochondrial phenotype, in which overexpression of Fis1 causes fragmented, round mitochondria, and mitochondrial autophagy is also impaired, as indicated by reduced parkin RBR E3 ubiquitin protein ligase (PRKN, better known as Parkin) expression (Alicka et al., 2019). Here, PRKN is linked to type 2 diabetes mellitus.
