The role of CD44 as a surface marker of glioma CSCs has been described by several authors (Tsukita et al., 1994; Anido et al., 2010; Xu et al., 2010); interestingly, CD44 would be the most common shared marked of stemness among CSCs derived from different malignancies (Mooney et al., 2016). This evidence concerns the gene CD44 and central nervous system cancer.
