TLR7 and infection: The increased production of basic neutrophil ROS and deficiency of phagocytic function in these patients are associated with an increased risk of infection, organ dysfunction, and death.47 At present, infection is still one of the leading causes of death in patients with decompensated cirrhosis,52 and the bactericidal deficiency of neutrophils can be reversed by the activation of TLR7/8 in vitro.53 Therefore, both improvement in liver function and control of infection are necessary to improve the final outcomes of patients with liver cirrhosis.
