Additionally, an epigenetic dysregulation, i.e., DNA hypomethylation of ACE2 resulting in ACE2 overexpression in T cells of SLE patients, has been shown; this phenomenon could be perpetuated by the oxidative stress induced by viral infections or by SLE flares and thus could contribute to the worse disease course seen in this SLE cohort (94).
