Similar to CoVs, enteroviruses are also positive-sense single stranded RNA viruses, and several enteroviruses have been shown to activate the inflammasome by acting on NLRP3, caspase-1, ASC, IL-1β, and GSDM-D (123), indicating that the inflammasome can be activated by infections that affect the gastrointestinal system, and that the machinery responsible for the inflammatory response mediated by the inflammasome is present in the gastrointestinal system. The gene discussed is CASP1; the disease is infection.
