SARS-CoV-2 is known to affect host cells via the angiotensin-converting enzyme receptor (ACE2), which in addition to being highly expressed in pulmonary AT2 cells, are also found in the gastrointestinal system such as cells in the esophagus, pancreas, hepatobiliary tract, small bowel, and colon - indicating that in addition to the respiratory system, the gastrointestinal system is a possible means of infection by COVID-19 (6).
