AD is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by two main pathological hallmarks: (i) intracellular neurofibrillary tangles consisting of hyperphosphorylated Tau proteins and (ii) extracellular amyloid plaques consisting of aggregates of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptides resulting from the processing of amyloid precursor protein (APP). Here, APP is linked to Alzheimer disease.
